Growing up in a small town in the communist Czechoslovakia it is possible I was the only child in town to have a Barbie doll to play with. It was a birthday present from my aunt who immigrated to America soon after I was born. It was a unique gift that I greatly cherished, along with a few shiny hot wheel cars, cardboard doll house with plastic furniture, action figures of Donald Duck, Pluto and Smurf on a red bicycle and numerous issues of Service Merchandise catalog. The toys stood out for their color and cheerfulness amid grayness of my surroundings. I will never forget the pleasure I got just from looking at them. The Dress series was created out of innocence and purity of childhood. The Dresses represent both past and present. They float in the space freely and stir our memories of of objects and experiences we have been attached to as well as our path to whom we have become. They are the symbols of motherhood and womanhood, an homage to femininity, a nostalgic reminder of simple joys and things we have loved that were our beginning. |
